Oakwood Baptist Church held its first service in the home of John and Lora Cardaropoli of Braselton, GA. Thirty-two people attended this service. From this humble beginning, God is raising up a thriving ministry dedicated to reaching as many people as possible with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
After only three weeks, we outgrew the space provided by the Cardaropoli's home and moved to the Martin Elementary School on Martin Road. The church continued to grow and after 15 months we purchased 10 acres of land across the street from the school on Martin Road. Shortly after purchasing our land, the Hall County School System informed us that unless we were in a building program we would have to find another location to hold services. The people of Oakwood Baptist Church decided to step out by faith, and we started making plans to build our existing facility. God provided for the building program in a miraculous way. In December of 2003, we held our first service in the new building.
Today, Oakwood Baptist Church has a variety of ministries through which we share the Gospel and teach the Bible to those we serve. We have ministries that are designed to reach every segment of our area as well as ministries to reach those who live around the world. We are committed to fulfilling the Great Commission as given in Matthew 28:19-20 which commands us to "Go," "teach," "baptize," and "teach." We believe this simple formula is the key to having a church that will please God and impact our world for Jesus Christ. We invite you to be a part of this ministry.
Currently, we average 350 in attendance on a regular Sunday. In addition to our regular church services, our thriving Spanish ministry, under the leadership of Samuel Samaniego, mirrors our services and outreach ministries. The Gainesville City Baptist Rescue Mission, directed by Ken Pullen, is in the process of building
a new, larger building so that we may reach even more of the homeless population. Our youth department, has seen several high days and now hosts an additional ministry called Teens-in-Transition (T-in-T) that focuses on encouraging teenagers from our area to overcome family and personal obstacles to become soldiers for Christ. Each Sunday, we hold two children's services, one during regular morning service and one during our afternoon bus services, in our fun and exciting Oakey-Doakey Town. Our church hosts a growing youth conference, Teen Extravaganza, each April; an exciting Vacation Bible School each July; a revival conference, the Foundations Conference, each August; and one of the largest ladies' conferences in the southeast each November. We are an outreach focused ministry that gives each age group several opportunities each week to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ.
We hope that you have found the history of our church as miraculous as we do. Please feel free to browse the rest of our website. Better yet, we would love to have you come and join in the excitement of Oakwood Baptist Church!
